How to Keep Lizards Out of Your Yard in Florida

How to Keep Lizards Out of Your Yard in Florida. Lizards are beneficial to lawns and gardens, preying on insects that would eat the local vegetation. Nonetheless, if you decide that you want to rid your lawn of the reptiles, it is better to try to create an environment that they find undesirable rather than removing them individually. For every lizard that gets trapped and carried away, another is sure to take its place. There are natural methods, nonetheless, useful in discouraging lizards.

Lizards don't like the smell of garlic oil and neem oil.

Things Needed

  • Garlic oil or neem oil
  • Caged screen enclosures
  • Sheet metal guards
  • Wire mesh
  • Sheers/chainsaw
  • Cement/sand
  • Traps

Step 1

Spray the lawn and surrounding areas with garlic oil or neem oil. Lizards do not like the smell and are more likely to pass up your lawn for your neighbor's.

Step 2

Install sheet metal guards on all trees in the lawn. The slippery surface prevents lizards from being able to climb up them.

Step 3

Put up caged screen enclosures around the pool and outside of the lawn. The creates a physical barrier to your yard.

Step 4

Cut down all fruit trees in your yard, with the exception of citrus trees, which lizards do not eat. Use shears for smaller trees and a chainsaw for larger vegetation. Remove all brush and thickets around the lawn where lizards would like to hide. Fill in any holes with cement and sand, as they may also collect lizards.

Step 5

Set up live traps in the lawn. The state of Florida requires permits for lizard traps and all lizards must be removed within 24 hours or it is considered animal abuse. Check the traps daily and dispose of them in a manner in compliance with local law.
