Many people all over the world have fish aquariums filled with exotic species of fish. Many of them are so beautiful to look at that they can almost take your breath away. You do not necessarily have to be a real fish lover to enjoy looking at all the different varieties of these wondrous creatures. Tropical fish are some of the biggest varieties that are collected and displayed in homes because of their unique features and vibrant colors. Some of these fish can be pretty costly and require specific care to keep them alive and thriving.

There are many people who want to enjoy the beauty of these tropical fish and other sea life that are just not satisfied with viewing them in an aquarium. Scuba diving a snorkeling in a coral reef is the dream vacation for many. The Great Barrier Coral Reef off the coast of Australia is one of the most popular places to go to see a wide variety of fish and other sea life. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system on the planet and can actually be seen from space. It is the largest accumulation of living things that creates a structure of its own. It stretches for miles and miles up and down the coast of Queensland in Australia.

The Great Barrier Reef is also considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of the World because of its size and along with the enormous population of life it sustains. You might think that with as many individual divers that go exploring in the reefs and the many scientists and marine biologists that have studied this coral reef, that there would be no new species of life to be discovered there. That seems to be not true at all.

Only recently have divers discovered not just a few new species, but hundreds. The discoveries were made for the most part along a two island stretch in the northwest area.
Along with encountering new types of coral, there was also found new varieties of rare jellyfish, amphipods, parasitic isopods, small crustacean species, and others.

Since the Great Barrier is considered to be a wonder, it is a protected area. It is home from the tiniest of creatures to even huge passersby like the whale shark. Various kinds of sea turtles come here to breed. There are also a number of endangered species of sea life that live among or visit the reef. Tourism abounds for this wonder of nature with good reason. There are resorts nearby and tours everyday. If you love sea life, a perfect vacation would be to see this magnificent spot in the ocean.
