How To Clean A Fish Tank?

Make sure you have unplugged the filter aeration and all other appliances.
Remove the top gently and use a towel and water to wipe down.
With a large mug get the fish out and hold them in the mug filled with water temporarily
Use an algae scraper to clean the inside of the tank
Take all the dirty decorations out. Wash these decorations, such as rocks and plants, separately using soapy water.
Scoop out 3/4th of the water. Usually getting out half the dirty water does the job.
Add chlorine to clean the water of the harmful chemicals in tap water which could be detrimental to the health of your fish.
Place the rocks and decorations back in the tank.
Clean the outside of your tank with a towel and rinse.
Add clean water and plug in the filters and other appliances again.
With a fishing net, scoop the fish out of the mug you had placed them in temporarily, and promptly release them in the tank.
Replace the top or hood and enjoy watching your fish again!

Some Useful Tips
Do not remove all the water in the first place. This is because you may deprive the tank of the normal bacteria that the fish need.
For the same reason do not over clean the gravel.
Likewise, experts advise that the filter media should not be completely replaced but cleaned and be used again. This prevents the deprivation from the bacteria that the fish would find useful to them.
On the inside of the tank, do not use soap or a detergent because the traces of it would be left in there and harm the fish.
Once or twice a week, simply scoop up ten to fifteen percent of the water and replace it with and fresh and clean water.
