How to Remove Dead Fish From an Aquarium

How to Remove Dead Fish From an Aquarium. If you have an aquarium of fish, eventually one will die. When this happens, you should take the dead fish out of the tank as soon as possible. Other fish like to pick at and eat the dead fish and this could be harmful to them. Here are some steps on how to remove dead fish from an aquarium.

Things Needed

  • A fish net

Step 1

Look at your tank to see where the dead fish is located. You will need to do this before you open the lid so that you will have a general idea of where the fish is. It will be hard to see it by looking down into the water.

Step 2

Open the lid to the aquarium. You may want to remove the lid if the dead fish is a larger fish.

Step 3

Use the fish net to scoop out the dead fish. You may have to sweep the fish net swiftly past the dead fish so that the moving water will make the fish float upwards. This will make it easier to come up under the dead fish and catch it in the fish net.

Step 4

Dispose of the dead fish in the toilet. Say goodbye and flush the toilet. The fish will go out to the sea or the river.

Step 5

Check the rest of the fish to make sure they look okay. If they look sick or are acting funny, you may need to get some form of treatment. Contact your local pet store representative if you see white spots or broken fins. They will be able to tell you which treatment will be best for your particular condition.

Warnings

  • Bury your fish in the back yard if you do not feel comfortable flushing them or throwing them in the trash.

Warnings

  • Do not flush larger fish down the toilet. Fish that are two or three feet in length will not fit down the toilet and could stop it up. Place a larger fish into a bag and tie it up. Place the bag in the trash and dispose of it properly.
