To pressurize the proposed 2nd dwelling for Asiatic Lions, being get up at Kuno Palpur Sanctuary in Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh, Central
Minister of state for Environment and Forest, Jairam Ramesh on Tuesday once again advocated that Gujarat should part its lions with Madhya Pradesh.
On Tuesday Minister Jairam Ramesh saw Sasangir sanctuary in Junagarh district of Gujarat, most famous for only residence of Asiatic Lions.
The Union Minister said that he was hopeful that the Narendra Modi Government would accept the proposal for shifting few lions to Madhya Pradesh.
The central minister of Environment and Forest said that I believe there should be second dwelling for Asiatic lions in the Madhya Pradesh. Thus we are talking with Madhya Pradesh Government for last so many years.
However, the main plan to change (relocations) the dwelling of Asiatic Lion from the Gir National Park to any other park in India was planed by Wildlife Research Institution Dehradun, in the 1980. Gir Park covered total area 1400 square Kilometres, which is too small for carnivore species of Asiatic lions because Gir has got the large number of Lions (about 400) in the park. The other reasons for changing the dwelling of Asiatic lion are like spread influence disease and other diseases or natural calamity such as had happened in Africa previously. It is a fear in the forest department and in the minds of lovers of Asiatic lions. So we wanted the second habitat for Asiatic lions.
After the extensive surveys, they selected Kuno Palpur wildlife sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh for relocation and breeding project of Asiatic lions from Gir wildlife sanctuary. This project was started with the help of central government worth RS. 64crore. I feel very sad to tell you that we have done very hard work although this project has failed by some reasons.
