dog wants to eat cat

Question
I adopted a 4 yr old female greyhound mix from the local shelter for my son. I have 4 cats in the home and another small dog. The new dog gets along well with my other dog but she really wants to get my cats. Earlier, I was taking her up to my sons room and she saw one of the cats, it was hard to contain her. I really felt she would harm the cat if she got a hold of it. Do you think the dog will overcome this and get used to the cats and be friendly?? Im not sure if I shoud return her to the shelter or try to train her to get along with the cats????

Answer
Oh, you don't have to return her. My dogs hated my cats when we first got them. The cats hated them more I think....
You can train her not to get after the cats. I did it. But first the dog must be trained for things like sit, stay, down, and know what bad and good is. Use a leash and have someone hold the cat while you keep her at a fair distance and then whenever she tries to get near it, be firm and say "no" and move her back. When she calms down, give her a treat and this will take place over time and then she'll settle down. hope this helps and feel free to follow up. =]
