14 yr. old bichon eating ice and snow frequently

Question
My dog has recently been on a clindamycin capsule twice daily and over the past two or three days is in and out of the house. We caught him eating snow and he is eating the ice chips I've put down while I try to figure out what is wrong.
He has become a finicky eater and is being quite insistent about going out where he voids, but mostly eats snow. Please help

Answer
Hi Janet, You did not tell me why your dog has been on clindamycin treatment. But I assume it was a skin or soft tissue injury. Clindamycin does have some side effect which can include stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and pain when swallowing. You should consult with your veterinarian immediately. I suspect that your dog may be experiencing painful swallowing, which is relieved by eating the cold snow and ice chips. It would also be a reason for him to avoid his normal diet. Please leave me some feedback and follow up with me to let me know what your vet has to say. Thank you. Regards, Susan
