Sociable lab disinterested in family

Question
Our mostly indoor 10 year old lab has recently shown no interest in spending
time with the family. Before this new behavior, she would follow me around
the house all day waiting for pets and play time. Now as soon as we return
from a walk she goes right upstairs to her bed or sits by the back door and
cries until we let her out. When in the backyard she sits in the corner in a
hold she dug under the tree in the shade. Should we worry about her new
behavior or is it normal for her behavior to change as she ages?

Answer
I would be concerned. And I'd schedule a consult with your vet. Any sudden behavior change can be an indicator of health issues. Things that occur to me to check are
Bloodwork - including a tickborne disease panel and 6 panel thyroid test Lyme, ehrlichia or hypothyroid can cause some pretty bizarre behavior changes
A general physical to make sure she's not in pain that could be managed
Also talk to your vet about Canine Cognative Disorder, which is sort of like Alzheimers in humans. There is a medication which can be very helpful in improving the dog's mental ability and quality of life - especially if you catch it early. Good luck Sandy Case MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
