Vitamin D And Prostate Health

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods. It is also produced by the body and activated after exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun. Vitamin D is vital to bone development and strength1. It also helps to keep teeth and gums healthy, especially in older adults. Studies show that inflammatory gum disease occurs much less frequently in people older than 50 who have adequate Vitamin D intake. 2And as cited in a study published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (November 2007), there is a theory being explored that healthy levels of Vitamin D may have the potential to help slow the aging   process and  assist the body in fighting off age-related diseases, such as heart disease and cancer. Although the findings are inconclusive, the evidence gathered and the optimism of the researchers looks promising. Vitamin D Cell Protection Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center are studying the protective qualities of Vitamin D and how it can support healthy prostate cells and healthy prostate functioning. These findings were published in The International Journal of Cancer in its June 15, 2008 issue. Vitamin D links with the gene G6PD, increasing its activity and the production of the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. Increased activity of the enzyme clears cells of reactive oxygen species (free radicals), the molecules that can damage and injure cells and may play a significant role in increasing the risk of numerous health issues. If you reduce DNA damage, you reduce the risk of cancer or aging," states Yi-Fen Lee, professor of urology at the Medical Center heading the research.  She adds, "Our study adds one more beneficial effect of taking a Vitamin D supplement. Taking a supplement is especially important for senior citizens and others who might have less circulation of Vitamin D, and for people who live and work areas where there is less sunshine." However, Dr. Yi-Fen Lee warns against taking large amounts of Vitamin D and advises that anyone beginning a supplement regimen consult their health advisor first. Natural Food SourcesVitamin D can be found in the flesh of fish and fish liver oils are among the best sources. Small amounts of vitamin D are found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks. Fortified foods provide most of the vitamin D in the American diet. Prostate dysfunction has been called a nutritional disease. Research widely agrees that it is possible to slow prostate enlargement by nutritional therapy. Supplements   with Vitamin D can also assist in providing the right nutrients for prostate health.  References:1.       Holick MF.
