Is There a Healthy Dog Food for Dogs With Allergies?

There are a number of ailments that animals can have that are the same or very similar to those ailments that occur in humans. Believe it or not, your dog can have allergies. Allergies can be caused by a number of allergens and pollutants and even food. A trial period using an alternative dog food for your dog with allergies is an easy and safe process.

Take a note of the current health of your dog. Their allergy symptoms can be similar to those that a human may have from a food allergy. Look at their skin in and around their ears, nose, forelegs, feet and even the anal area. Is they are scratching or rubbing those areas that may have red and irritated skin? How long have the symptoms been occurring and what have they had to eat within that same period of time?

Curing your dog's allergies is as easy as a simple change of the food they eat. The trial period referred to earlier should run for about two weeks. This is sufficient time for the food your dog was eating to get out of the system, for the body to heal from the allergy symptoms and for the body to adjust to the newly introduced food.

During the two week trial period, which is done in hopes that the allergies will naturally stop, can be frustrating to both the dog and the owner. The only food that your dog should receive is the new food and of course water; this means no other foods or treats. The goal is to "cleanse" your dog's body to see if the cause of their allergies is the food. This process is the simplest and most humane process to check and see if the old dog food was causing the allergies.

If the symptoms that your dog is experiencing seem extreme or is keeping your pet from their daily activities, you may want to have your veterinarian render a check-up to determine if your dog is indeed suffering from allergies and what the exact cause could be. Keep in mind that there is no specific dog food for dogs with allergies. Just like in humans, either medication is necessary or the sufferers must remove themselves from the cause.

If you have allergies, you are very aware how much of a nuisance they can be. Imagine how your dog must feel. In addition, can you imagine having watery eyes and a runny nose and not being able to dry them? Having a healthy pet is important. Your pet can't tell you how they feel so you must do what you can to keep them happy and healthy. In addition, you may only feed your pet one or two kinds of foods and if they were allergic to one of them, how unhappy they would be to only have one food!

Each type of dog food may have slightly different ingredients; so using the trial period to determine dog food allergies is a very important step that you can take as a dog owner. During that time, not only will you be able to tell if your dog is allergic to their food but you can find a better alternative such as homemade dog food to offer to your beloved furry friend.
