Tricks To Make Maltese Training Easy For You and Your Pet

Though this breed seems easy to handle considering their small size, providing them with maltese training can be challenging especially to inexperienced owners. New or potential owners should know that like most dogs under the toy group, maltese dogs have extremely lively and playful temperament thus making them difficult to handle. However, that fact isn't supposed to discourage you from getting a new puppy or adopting one from the nearest maltese rescue center. There are many ways to get positive training result only if you are responsible and resourceful enough to find them.

Here are some ways to make training easy for you and your four-legged bundle of joy:

1. Whether you are adopting a grown dog or getting a pup that is at least eight weeks of age, start maltese training as soon as your new pet arrives home. Training does not necessarily have to involve commands or other advanced tricks. What is important during this stage is the opportunity to expose your pet to things, places and scenarios of everyday life. A pet that is properly socialized is less likely to develop bad habits at the same time easier to train compared to those that are not socialized.

2. Dogs learn faster when you do things on regular basis. Taking a walk or exercising him, feeding and potty breaks should happen at almost the same time each day to help him develop a routine.

3. Be consistent whether with your commands or the training techniques you are using. If you are using the command "come" today, remember to use the same command in the next days to prevent confusion. The commands "come here" or "come here boy" may mean different to him. The same is true with maltese training methods. When getting rid of his jumping behavior, train him to do so regardless of the situation. He will not know the difference between your work clothes and pajamas so allowing him to jump on you when you are wearing your pajamas and prohibiting him from doing so when you are sporting your best suit will possibly cause confusion.

4. Though they are known for their intelligence, it is better to tackle one command at a time during maltese training. If he has mastered the command you are teaching him, that is the time to proceed with the next command.

5. Recognize and reward good behavior. One way to let your pet know that you are pleased with what he did is to give him rewards. It could be his favorite treat, toy, time to play or praise. However, it is important to regulate the use of treats to prevent him from becoming treat-dependent.
