Take A Parrot And Win A Companion For Life

One creature that has always amazed me is the pet parrot. From being young I recollect visiting my aunt's and talking to her darling parrot. The parrot was amusing and especially friendly. When my husband died, a great feeling of being alone overwhelmed me. This had lead me to spend a lot of time looking at childhood pictures. More so, the ones of when I was a child and visiting my aunt to see her parrot. Whilst looking at the photos, I considered buying a parrot as a pet.

Nevertheless, I did not know the first thing about caring for a parrot. My aunt always believed that only time and patience were needed. The Setback was that patience was not my strong point. I was confident though, that with fantastic care a parrot would be on cloud nine with me. It would give me the companionship I desired and fun too. I decided that a visit to the library was in order first.

There were numerous books in the library, all with fantastic, helpful information. It advised buying a big enough cage to allow the parrot to move around well, to spread its wings. I would also need to remember to line the botom of the cage with newspaper and clean it daily. This wouldn't be a dilemma, I always have the hoover on standby. Additional items I would need to purchase were food and water bowls, a perch and numerous toys.

At times parrots also like to take a wash and I should allow the bird a place to do this. It needed some variety in its diet as well as its claws clipping if they got too long. Vegetables, fruits, nuts and grains are favorite foods of most birds.

The penny dropped, keeping a pet parrot would be intense work. It didn't put me off though as there was also the prospect of teaching it how to talk. Parrots enjoy to talk and hear human voices.

The pet shop was the next place to visit. A useful assistant said he had just what I wanted, a fine-looking African gray. He offered interesting pointers too, don't clean out the cage using chemicals, just warm water should do. So I bought the cage, toys, food and water bowls, a few more books and of course the parrot.

Dolly is the name of my new parrot and she is such a terrific friend. Straight away, I sensed her warming to me and now we have such a rich bond. Much of the ideas, tips and hints that have been given to me came from the internet. I learned everything from how to feed them to how to keep them cheerful.
