Corgi Training: Top Five Commands To Teach Your Puppy

Bringing home a new corgi puppy should indicate that you are well-prepared to care for the pet and provide him with proper corgi training. These dogs are not usually aggressive but since they have herding instincts, it is best that they are trained properly to avoid any undesirable behavior that could result in accident or injuries to anyone around.

During the first couple of days at home, training does not have to be advanced or anything complicated. It is more on getting your dog used to the new environment you brought him into. As he starts to settle down, training should progress into obedience with the basic commands as the first lesson. The top five basic obedience commands include:

Come.

Come, the most widely used command, is the first command your pet should learn. This is used to call your dog to come to you during meal time, if you need to attach his collar and leash, if he broke free from you, chases a car or other animals and many other situations.

Sit.

Sit is one of the most useful commands you need to teach your pet. This command makes it easy for you to control and keep your pet safe during various circumstances. You can use sit command when he is excited while you are preparing his meal, if he has jumping habit, if he chases anyone or anything that passes by your house as well as prevent him from running across a busy street.

Down.

Like sit command, the down command can also be used to control and keep a dog safe in many ways. Additionally, a dog that lies down on command to receive his food is showing high respect for his master. Lying in down position is also more comfortable especially if your pet needs to stay down for more than a couple of minutes.

Heel.

Heel is another important command you need to teach your puppy during corgi training for it helps you control him when walking. When given the heel command, your puppy should know that he needs to walk parallel to your left leg and should never walk behind nor ahead of you. Although corgis are small and less difficult to deal with even if they are pulling, teaching the command is still recommended to prevent future problems.

Stay.

Stay command prompts a dog to stay in the last position commanded to him. Commonly used with the commands sit, stand or down, stay is also an ideal command to prevent your pet from doing what he is not supposed to do thus keeps him safe. It can prevent him from running across a busy street, chase after cars or passersby and the likes.
