Should I Finally Purchase a Dog For My Son?

Okay, my child wants a puppy. I keep saying no. Yes, I know that this is very selfish of me; however, I'm not a big fan of pets. Don't get me wrong. I like pets, but I don't like assuming responsibility for them. Dogs are actually cute...when they are someone else's responsibility and not mine.

Actually, if it isn't a fish, I don't see myself as having a pet. Fish are low maintenance. I can handle the responsibility of a fish. We presently have a fish. What's wrong with fish? The problem is that my son still wants a puppy. I've run out of reasons that I can describe to a child, but I have my reasons. I think that they are good reasons too. Fortunately, my husband agrees with me and hasn't tried to reverse my decision.

What Are My Reasons for Not Wanting a Dog?

Too Time Consuming- I just don't have the time to take care of a dog. Yes, if my household gets a dog, I will be the one that has to take care of it. I refuse to commit to walking a dog, cleaning up behind a dog or feeding a dog on a regular basis. I barely get my family fed on time.

Too Costly-Dogs cost money. I view pet ownership as a luxury. It requires a commitment of taking care of another living creature. When you bring a pet home, it means that you will take care of it for the rest of its life. That's scary. I will have to pay a vet for things that are expensive. A dog needs to be spayed or neutered. What if my pet gets a major sickness? If medical bills aren't enough, feeding a dog is almost impossible. Have you seen the cost of dog food these days?

Housetraining -I'm not going to train a dog. Nope! No Way! Nada! I will be waiting until the end of time for my son to do the honors. Children are always guilty of asking for pets, but they never take full responsibility for them. So, if I make the decision to allow a puppy into my household, then I will have to assume full responsibility.

What Are My Reasons for Wanting a Dog?

My Son-My son desperately wants one. I am not too fond of taking care of pets, but I don't want to spoil this cherished moment for my son. There is nothing like a dog and his son. I still get teary eyed when I see those old Lassie movies on all of the classic movie channels. I keep thinking that I am keeping something of value from my wonderful little boy.

In conclusion, my son has asked for a puppy on numerous occasions. My husband and I just smile and make up excuses that end with a response of "No." However, I think my son may be whittling me down. I think I give in. My son deserves to experience the wonderful joy of owning a little dog. I've watched him faithfully feed the fish night after night, all on his own. Maybe it is time for a puppy.
