It's never easy when you learn your family dog and constant companion has cancer. Often it is the owner who is most affected, which is mainly due to our lack of knowledge on cancer treatment for dogs. Outwardly your best friend shows no signs of this deadly illness but you know the truth and you naturally want to do all you can to ensure he/she has the best quality of life in the coming years.

First it is important to understand what cancer treatment for dogs involves, only then can you choose the best form of care. Like humans there are numerous forms of cancer and not all cancer treatment is the same. In some cases the cancer may be terminal and life expectancy will be relatively short while other cancers may be localised which may or may not affect their ability to live an active life. Sometimes a localised cancer can be treated by amputation to stop it spreading throughout their body, but what are the consequences for your dog? How will it affect their recovery and more importantly their mobility for the rest of their lives.

Additional love and affection are what most dog owners turn to but while it will do no harm will it actually help your pet? It is therefore important we learn as much about all cancer treatment for dogs as possible.

What do you do? Who do you ask for help? How will it affect my dog? Will human cancer treatments be effective on my dog or will the side-affects be worst for my pet than living with cancer. Do diets help or are they simply putting off the inevitable? How do I treat my pet on a daily basis? These are just a few of the questions you need to seek answers to. So where do you start?

Naturally you speak to your vet first, to find out what they have diagnosed and their recommended treatment. Unfortunately vets are in business and although they have the very best intentions and care for the wellbeing of animals they do not always understand the bond between owners and their pets. This does not always result in what is the best 'overall' cancer treatment for dogs, and it rarely addresses how you can be a part of the treatment and recovery process ensuring the best outcome from this trying period in both your lives.

I personally went through this dilemma and I am happy to say as a result of some diligent research I found the balance of care needed to keep my best mate still with me six years later and not only that but still enjoying her daily walks. What I learnt was that it is just as important to manage your own feelings and uncertainty in order to make rational decisions and this was made easier when I knew where to find the answers on cancer treatment for dogs.
