What Is The Best Way For Toilet Training Your Pekingese Puppy?

One of the important things to do upon bringing your new Pekingese home is to start toilet training them - it's one of the biggest problems people have in puppy ownership and can result in a lot of stress. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to go about this. But which way of toilet training your Pekingese is best?

The first thing you should know is that Pekingeses are slow to learn things when compared to other breeds, so whatever method you choose will also likely see your puppy toilet trained a bit slower than you might think. One way that can see your Pekingese toilet trained much faster is to implement a dog crate. This makes use of the fact that dogs naturally prefer not to soil their sleeping area, and forces them to wait until they are in the correct spot (which is usually outside).

The first step is to choose the right crate for your Pekingese - the whole premise of using a dog crate implies that you replicate their natural den as closely as possible. That means if you get a crate that's too big they'll go to the toilet on one half and sleep on the other, thus making the use of a crate fairly pointless. As a guideline you should choose a wire crate - this is by far the easiest for toilet training as your Pekingese can comfortably see outside and won't be made too anxious - and either get a size that just allows them enough room to turn around or get a divider for the crate so you can effectively change the size as they grow.

As your Pekingese is a relatively slow learner, you should also expect crate training will show results fairly slow - though, it will likely take half the time had you used another toilet training method. They might be hesitant to get inside the crate at first, but if you encourage them using treats or a favorite toy you can reassure your Pekingese it's a positive place to be. Try to avoid forcing them inside, as that can cause it to have negative connotations - you want the experience to remain positive. When they are fairly comfortable with being inside you can start your Pekingese's toilet training schedule.

The first thing you should know is young Pekingeses can't control their own bodily functions for very long, so you will need to give them regular breaks outside. You should also be ready to get up at least once during the night to let them out because they won't be able to hold it in otherwise. When you are able to supervise your Pekingese puppy, keep them inside the crate and take them outside every 30-40 minutes until they go to the toilet.

If they do it effectively give them praise or a treat and some play time before placing them inside their crate again and continuing the routine. With enough consistency, crate training your Pekingese will mean they can control their urges much more quickly than any other toilet training method.
