How Pet Strollers Improve Your Dog's Quality of Life

Do you have an aging dog that is beginning to slow down? Does he quickly get tired on that two mile run you usually do? The good news is that dogs that have led active lives, will probably stay healthier longer than dogs that have been sedentary. But, eventually age will catch up to him and he will begin to have hip and joint problems. This doesn't mean your dog wants to stay home and do nothing. Dogs will always love to get outside to enjoy the sights and scents, especially when they get to do it with you.

The most common types of disabilities experienced by older dogs, which slow them down, include arthritis, kidney, liver and heart disease and obesity. If you control what and how much your dog eats as they age, you won't have to fight obesity. It's important to keep your dog active as he ages, but the amount of activity will most likely be reduced. Take him out for that two mile run, but anticipate that he won't make it and have a back-up plan. Enter the pet stroller.

You can find a pet stroller to accommodate a dog of almost any size. Of course, there are many more to choose from if your dog weighs less than 45 pounds, but there are several well-designed pet strollers that will comfortably carry your dog that weighs up to 150 pounds. The goal is to make your aging dog feel comfortable riding in a pet stroller by choosing a cabin large enough so he can sit, stand and turn around inside. Pet strollers can be found with air-filled or EVA foam tires. Air-filled tires, although heavier, provide a smoother ride than EVA tires. Most pet strollers have a sturdy suspension system, which also contributes to your aging pet feeling secure inside the cabin. There are also a variety of pet strollers that have a low-to-the-ground point of entry. Riding closer to the ground is pleasing to many dogs.

You can use the pet stroller as a short-term break for your dog on that two mile run. If you have more than one dog to exercise, you can rotate the dogs in the stroller. This gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs, but also an opportunity to rest when needed.

Perhaps you have an older dog that really can't walk much at all. A pet stroller allows him to enjoy the outdoors because they have large mesh-covered windows on most or all sides of the cabin. If you choose to have your pet stick his head out of the cabin window, there is a safety tether so you can feel certain that your dog won't try and jump out while the stroller is moving.

A dog's quality of life will be improved greatly by continuing to be able to enjoy a breeze on their face, sniffing fresh air and absorbing the wonderful scents of other dogs.
