The Briard (also known as the "Berger de Brie") is a herding breed of dog. They feature a shaggy coat that looks like a haystack. The breed first appeared in the 1300s. They were originally bred for guarding homes and sheep. These days they are popular as a family guard dog, herding sheep, police work or search and rescue. They can be recognized by their shaggy coat and fearless nature. They are thought to originate from France during the 1300s and are a descendant of the Berger Picard, Beauceron and Barbet.

They are classified as a large sized dog. The recommended male size is 23-27 inches high with a weight of 75-100 pounds, while the female size is 22-25.5 inches high with a weight of 50-65 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be protective and loyal. They are typically reserved or suspicious with strangers, and this makes them suitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be quite intelligent, and ranks 30th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are gentle with children, which can make them suitable as a family pet. They don't get along well with other animals such as other dogs they may become aggressive with. Grooming them is a demanding task. They need frequent brushing every day, and full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. They enjoy having a good yard to run around in, but can be suitable for apartment life.

Like most large sized breeds, they are primarily shorter-lived with a life expectancy of 10-12 years. Their most severe health concern is hip dysplasia, and they are also susceptible to eye problems, bloat or hypothyroidism. They enjoy hobbies like agility, herding, swimming or jogging. They have a medium level of energy, which means they need long walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Briard you need to be prepared to give them firm leadership and a lot of grooming. They are less suitable for multiple pet households, but highly suitable for active owners who can be their confident leader. One of the best things about this breed is that it has a protective and loyal nature that makes it a good family watch dog.
