The trusted union between human beings and the faithful dog can be traced back to at least 20,000 years - it is difficult to be precise about when the friendship began, but it was proved by a cave painting in a cave in the Ardeche region of France containing earliest known cave paintings which included a trail of footprints of a child about ten, alongside those of a canid that appears to be part-wolf, part-dog - the footprints appear to be at least about 26,000 years old, and confirms the relationship between humans and their dogs working relationship is therefore a unique phenomenon. As we read more about the history of the relationship between humans and the trusted dog, then we must understand that the humble dog is the only domesticated animal that can perform such a wide range of roles for the dogs' human companion.
The dog performs such a varied and wide ranging variety of roles for their human counterparts and these unique roles for humans includes, herding cattle, herding sheep and even a life companion to the blind and disabled and to the more extreme, to sniff the presence of drugs, explosives and tracking missing people in the most hostile environments including war torn countries and don't forget the unique value of dogs when they are trained to find the scent of humans and buried alive in the mountains under thousands of tons of avalanche snow, and again the trusted dog is one of the first responders with their human handlers when people are trapped in the remains of an earthquake and even a tsunami.
Yet what can history of the trusted dog teach us about the necessary training of our pet dog?
According to John Bradshaw, a biologist who founded the anthrozoology department at University of Bristol, England, he states the primitive canines probably remained fairly isolated from each other for several thousand years. Then as they became progressively more domesticated they then moved with people on large-scale migrations, mixing their genes with other similarly domesticated creatures and becoming increasingly more dog-like - and less wolf-like, in the process.
For John Bradshaw - biologist, believes that dog owners having some knowledge of how dogs got to be dogs is the first stage towards gaining a better understanding of what dogs and people mean to each other and the fostering of trust so essential between the dog and trainer/ companion.
The initial idea of buying a puppy or dog to live in the home as part of the family, can be a major decision which must not be taken likely, because owning a puppy or dog must bring commitment to every family member as the puppy or dog must be an integrated part of the family, and each family member must play their part in the everyday social care - including training participation, from the minute the puppy or dog enters the home.
As soon as the puppy or dog enters the home the family must participate collectively in training the puppy or dog, although there must be a member who will have overall control of the training, but essentially the training techniques must be supported by the whole of the family members - consistency and compliance for the whole family of the training techniques is the key to a well behaved family puppy or dog, if the training techniques is not reinforced by the whole family then the family puppy or family dog's position in the family can become inconsistent and very confusing - each family member teaching the family puppy or family dog differing variations or differing versions of training techniques, this scenario can only lead to total confusion for the family puppy or family dog.
To avoid this state of total confusion right from the beginning of the family puppy or family dog entering the home, it is essential that every member of the family must decide on the most essential Dog Training Guide/Book to purchase and then for all the family members if deciding to participate in the family puppy or family dog training - not necessarily recommended to have more than one person to train the family puppy or family dog, must use the preferred Dog Training Guide/Book and not stray away from the teachings of this preferred Dog Training Guide.
If I was forced to use only one Dog Training Guide and exclude all others then I must admit this can be an easy option, because most, if not all the modern day Dog Training Guides and standards has been measured for the last quarter of the century from the excellent Dog Training Book "How to be your Dogs Best Friend". This new and expanded edition, with a fresh new design and new photographs throughout, preserves the best features of the original classic while bringing the book fully up to date.
The result: this ultimate dog training manual for a new generation of dog owners - and of course, for their canine best friends. Very Highly Recommended.
