Basic Things You Should Know About The Boston Terrier

The Boston Terrier (also known as the "American Gentleman") is a non-sporting breed of dog. They feature a brindle, seal or black coat with white markings. The breed first appeared in the 1800s. They were originally bred for acting as a show dog. These days they are popular as a companion breed for families or allergy sufferers. They can be recognized by their playful and well-mannered temperament. They are thought to originate from Boston and are a descendant of English Terriers, the Bulldog and French Bulldog.

They are classified as a small sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 15-17 inches high with a weight of 15-25 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be friendly, gentle and well-mannered. They are typically reserved (but quickly become friendly) with strangers, and this makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be fairly intelligent, and ranks 54th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are great with children, which can make them suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs and pets. Grooming them is a simple task. They need occasional brushing every week or so, and full grooming every month or two. They enjoy having a small (though don't really need one) yard to run around in, but can very easily be suitable for apartment life.

Like most small sized breeds, they are primarily longer-lived with a life expectancy of 10-14 years. Their most severe health concern is cataracts or other eye problems, and they are also susceptible to deafness, breathing difficulties, sensitivity to hot and cold or allergies. They enjoy hobbies like play sessions or indoor games of fetch. They have a moderate to high level of energy, which means they need long walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Boston Terrier you need to be prepared to give them plenty of exercise and attention. They are less suitable for a guard dog, but highly suitable for active owners, apartment dwellers or families. One of the best things about this breed is that it has one of the gentlest temperaments that make it one of the best companion dogs around. Another good thing about them is they are hypoallergenic and a great choice for people who suffer from dog allergies.
