The Chihuahua (also known as the New Yorker in Mexico) is a toy breed of dog. They feature a short or long coat that comes in several colors. The breed first appeared in the 9th century. They were originally bred for companionship. These days they are popular as companion dogs for small households or apartments. They can be recognized by their tiny size and high sense of self importance. They are thought to originate from South America and are a descendant of the native Techichi and several introduced breeds.

They are classified as a tiny sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 6-9 inches high with a weight of under 6 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be lively, self-confident and devoted. They are typically suspicious with strangers, but their tiny size makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be not intelligent, and ranks 67th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are not the best with children, which can make them not highly suitable as a family pet. They don't get along well with other animals such as other dogs. Grooming them is a simple task. They need occasional brushing every two or three days, and full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. They enjoy having a small yard to run around in, but can be suitable for apartment life.

Like most tiny sized breeds, they are primarily long-lived with a life expectancy of 16-18 years. Their most severe health concern is injury due to their size, and they are also susceptible to low blood sugar, eye infections or dental issues. They enjoy hobbies like play sessions or running around a dog park. They have a medium to high level of energy, which means they need short walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Chihuahua you need to be prepared to give them a lot of companionship and attention. They are less suitable for families with young children, but highly suitable for a gentle owner that will give them plenty of companionship. One of the best things about this breed is that it is among the longest living and most devoted of all breeds which makes it one of the greatest companion dogs.
