Basic Things You Should Know About The Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky (also known as the "Sibe") is a working breed of dog. They feature a thick black, grey or red and white coat with a face mask. The breed first appeared in ancient times (they are one of the oldest known breeds). They were originally bred for pulling large loads over long distances. These days they are popular as a sled dog, search and rescue dog or companion. They can be recognized by friendliness and sense of adventure. They are thought to originate from Siberia and are a descendant of the original Eskimo dog.

They are classified as a medium sized dog. The recommended male size is 21-23.5 inches high with a weight of 45-60 pounds, while the female size is 20-21 inches high with a weight of 35-50 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be gentle, outgoing and adventurous. They are typically friendly with strangers, and this makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be quite intelligent, and ranks 45th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are good with children, which can make them suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs they live with from puppyhood. Grooming them is a simple task. They need regular brushing every day (when shedding, less when not), and full grooming every 8 to 10 weeks. They enjoy having a large, well-fenced yard to run around in, but mostly won't be suitable for apartment life.

Like most medium sized breeds, they are primarily longer-lived with a life expectancy of 12-14 years. Their most severe health concern is hip dysplasia, and they are also susceptible to eye problems and skin issues. They enjoy hobbies like sled racing or hiking. They have a medium to high level of energy, which means they need long walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Siberian Husky you need to be prepared to give them plenty of exercise and attention. They are less suitable for less active owners or those who live in hot climates, but highly suitable for active owners or families in cooler environments. One of the best things about this breed is that it is a fun loving dog that will want to share your every adventure.
