How To Introduce A New Pet Cat To Your Old One

If you are a cat lover, then you are one of the many that treat their pet felines as family. There will come a time when you would want to have more than just one cat. However, before getting a new kitten or a new cat to add to your family, you should consider some things first. Adding a new cat together with your old one may not be as easy as just getting another gadget or stuffs. You'll need to consider the personality of your old cat and his or her feelings.

When you get a new cat, you can't expect that your old one will be accustomed to the new comer right away. In fact, they may not be able to get along at first. Cats are very unpredictable, so the time that the new and old cats are able to adjust with each other can vary. Here are some things that you can do and keep in mind when bringing a new cat home:

Have a friend bring in the new cat or kitten within a cat carrier and place it in a separate room in your house. You should provide it with its own toys, water and food dishes, a cozy cat bed, scratching post and of course its own litter box. This can allow your new cat or kitten to adjust to the environment of your home. Through this, you can also indirectly allow both cats to know that there is another cat in the house and allow them to get used to each other's scents.

You should never force both cats to meet on the first day, since both cats would most likely end up fighting. You should swap the cats from time to time. Place the old cat within the room where you placed the new cat and allow the new comer to roam freely within the house. By doing, it can allow them to gradually get used to each other's scent and think that it is part of the scent of your home.

Tantrums and outbursts can be expected from either cat during the adjustment period. Through this time, you need to be patient and show affection for both cats. However, you'll need to do it separately to avoid increasing the tension of competition between them. Slowly allow them to meet with each other by leaving the door to the other room open for a little bit. Through this, they can see and smell each other.

When you decide that it's time to let them mingle with each other, you should oversee their meeting. Praise them for any good behavior they give towards each other and stop their fights if things get heated up.

You should allow them both to enjoy activities with each other like providing them with toys that they can share or playing with them both. If they already got along, you should also provide them with a larger cat bed which can accommodate both of them. This way you can also allow them to be comfortable when they sleep.
