Top Mistakes Most Cat Owners Make

At present, cats are among the favorite pets of both adults and children not only because they are cut and adorable, but also because they are not that hard to care for.

Like dogs, cats are effective stress reliever in children and adults, thus they are commonly found in nursing homes and geriatric facilities. More so, they can easily detect if their master has some emotional problems, thus they try to comfort you by purring and hovering around your legs to comfort you. They are also perfect companion for elderly people because they are perfect antidote for loneliness. More so, they need less or minimum exercise compared to dogs.

Some people think that cats are easier to care for than dogs or any other pets, but they are wrong because cat owners also experienced problems in caring for cats, especially first time pet owners. Most often, they blame other members of the family for the mistakes they committed.

Before you decide to bring a cat at home, you should do your share of research to know what appropriate moves and care needed by cats or ask advice from your veterinarian. Apart from the care, attention and love you must give to your pet, you should also consider the expenses associated with having cats at home such as pet foods, spaying and neutering. Knowing all these things can affect your adoption decisions.

Below are common mistakes committed by first time cat owners.

- Impulse decision to adopt a pet. Some individuals abruptly decide to adopt stray cats or cats displayed in pet stores without knowing the huge responsibility associated with it, thus some of them failed to provide their needs.

- Not following the advice of your veterinarian. Due to budget constraints or whatever reasons cat owners have, some of them failed to comply the recommendations or suggestions of veterinarians like regular physical examinations, check ups and vaccinations. As pet owner, it is your duty to keep your cat's health at peak always, thus you have to follow the advice of your veterinarian, otherwise inform him if you are short of funds so he can do something about it. Bear in mind that these examinations are vital in determining any possible onset of diseases and illnesses and it would be easier for veterinarians to treat diseases if they diagnosed earlier. Some pet owners even skipped diagnostic procedures to save money. Some cat owners would only bring their pet in if the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours. If you do not trust your veterinarian, then change vets to someone whom you trust.

- Overfeeding of pets. It is a misconception that overfeeding your cats is a sign of your love and care because it would only lead to obesity, spoiled appetite and dental diseases.

- Failure to clean their litter box frequently. You should clean their litter box always because failure to do would lead to contamination of microorganisms and bacteria and foul smell inside your house as well.

Punishing cats. Giving them physical punishment like scruffing or spanking will confuse them and will damage the relationship between both of you.

By knowing all these mistakes, you can avoid committing it yourself.
