American Wirehair cats are friendly and very loving domestic cats originally found in New York. In the United States, these wirehair cats are considered as their national treasure. These breeds are medium-sized regular featured cats, best known for their curly and wiry coats.

Their coats are unusual, thick, spongy and firm which come down to the whiskers. American Wirehair cats come in various colors and patterns ranging from blue, white and black to tabby, calico and bi-colour. These loving domestic cat breeds are best known for their unique wiry, kinky fur and are portrayed as similar to steel wool.

Origin

In 1966, in Vernon, in New York, the American Wirehair breeds first occurred due to an accidental mutation to two barn cats. The cat owner decided to breed them with American Shorthair cats popularly known as Rex cats. Two more new wirehaired kittens were born. A spontaneous mutation between these breeds had been observed which resulted in a huge growth in their numbers. These breeds got recognition in the year 1967. Apart from New York the American Wirehair cars also became popular in Germany and Canada.

Breed Trait and Characteristics

These cats are popularly known as people cats as they are very much attention seekers and love human attention as well as affection. These American Wirehair cats are fun loving, quiet and gentle, active, have a wonderful sense of humor and playful in nature. These cute people cats generally love to staying indoors.

These cat breeds are almost similar to American Shorthairs, only they differ in their springy, tough coat, including their moustaches or whiskers and ear fur. It is proved that the coats of American Wirehair cats are similar to the wire coats of some dog breeds.

American Wirehair are medium sized, sturdy build people friendly domestic cats that have round heads, distinct muzzle and soaring cheekbones. Mostly, they have golden eyes, but sometimes in some white ones they have amber or blue colored eyes. The male American Wirehair cats are bigger than the females and have dominant coat traits. As a result, any breeding between these Wirehairs and any other cat can produce wirehair kittens.

Generally the American Wirehair cats are healthy and resistant to diseases, but also they have some major health problems. They are:.

?#65533;?Risk of heart failure: As wirehairs are produced by constant breeding with American shorthairs, which increase the risk of heart failure in American wirehairs popularly known as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy in cats.

If cared properly, these gentle and people friendly Wirehairs cats can live up to 15 years.
