The Arabian Mau, a breed of domestic cat, is a descendant of the desert cat which is a short-haired landrace that resides in the desert of the Arabian Peninsula. The cat thrives in the localities and in spite of the extreme climate has adapted well.

With a large firm body structure that has strong musculature, the cat, however, is not very large in size. The slender legs end in oval paws.

The eyes, slanted and large, are slightly oval. In this species, there is no relation between the eye and coat colors of the cat. The Arabian Mau cat has large ears bent a bit forward, are positioned in sides, and are highly mounted on the skull.

The coat, short and lying close to the body appears and has no undercoat firm to touch. Not necessarily silky, it is noticeably very glossy.

Origin

The Arabian Mau is developed from a species of desert cat that has been a landrace resident of UAE for more than a millennium. Well suited to the hot, arid Middle Eastern environment, this variety, just like all other domestic cats, originated from the African wildcat, Felis Silvestris Lybica. Now, this variety consists of the majority of the street cat population of Arabian Peninsula cities, and keeping them as pets is avoided due to feral behavior.

Breed Traits and Characteristics

Arabian Mau cats are known for their loving temperaments. This cat breed is known for their devotion, love and affection towards the owner. This cat can always be a counted as a reliable companion of an individual who takes care of it. Arabian Mau is very friendly with children and other animals. These cats are very clean in nature and tend to groom themselves very well. One of their distinctive features is a nice soft and gentle purring that comes from the inside. These cats are quiet in nature, mewing only if feeling hungry or require anything or want to attract your attention.

These cats are inquisitive, active, agile, and have hunting qualities. Outdoor cats, especially males, always guard their territory against other male cats.

Even the kittens are healthy and strong from birth, thanks to the Arabian Mau cat's good immune system. Pedigreed cats and mixed-breed cats both are prone to certain genetic health issues.
