10 Great Dog Breeds For Kids

29 9:28:51

Our last post focused on cat breeds for kids, so now it’s time to turn to dogs! Just like before, we’ve compiled a list of ten dog breeds that are great for children, and the reasons why. Here we go!

10. Bulldog

PetMD says, “The Bull Dog has a sturdy build that is perfect for kids who like to roughhouse. The Bull Dog is comfortable living in large houses, as well as apartments. However, it won’t win any awards for ‘most energetic dog.’ A docile, friendly, and loyal dog, it gets along well with other pets and dogs, too.”

9. Vizsla

DogTipper is another great source on this subject. They state that the Vizsla has a gentle disposition and manner perfect for living with children. Loyal, quiet, and affectionate, the Vizsla breed is extremely obedient and can pick up on tricks and commands quickly.

8. Golden Retriever:

Again according to DogTipper, the Golden Retriever is the most popular breed in America. Sharing a personality with the Labrador Retriever, Goldens are known for being loyal and kind. Needing plenty of exercise, they’re well suited for active families who can take their dog with them on outings.

7. Beagle

While the Golden Retriever is the most popular breed in America, MarthaStewart.com lists the Beagle at the top of their list of dogs that are good with children: “It’s easy to see why the beagle is one of the most popular dogs in the United States. It’s a happy-go-lucky, friendly breed and makes a wonderful family pet.”

6. Bull Terrier

PetMD says that the Bull Terrier “can get quite rambunctious and requires plenty of playtime. Therefore, it is a perfect dog for a large family. The Bull Terrier will return your affection by being very protective of your children.”

5. Icelandic Sheepdog

According to MarthaStewart.com, this breed is “extremely social, loving, and patient with children, making them an ideal family dog.” They are also intelligent and, therefore, easily trained!

4. Irish Red and White Setter

Another breed listed by MarthaStewart.com. “This breed’s kind and friendly attitude makes it a great family dog. Courageous, spirited and determined, red and white setters require regular exercise. They need minimal brushing or trimming since owners prize a natural appearance, and the breed tends to carry less coat than the Irish setter.”

3. Collie

PetMD states that “Collies are a very gentle and predictable breed, rarely biting its human family and easily trainable, perfect for families that are unfamiliar with dogs. While this breed is typically mild mannered (like Clark Kent!), it was originally bred as a herding dog, so it may try and herd your children.”

2. Poodle

“Often given rather curious haircuts by their owners,” says PetMD, “the poodle is a very smart and gentle dog. It’s also great for kids with allergies, as it sheds very little; it does, however, require scheduled grooming.”
The site also states, “this is a proud and elegant dog that is both caring and loyal. Seldom annoyed or bored, the Poodle’s friendly demeanor, good nature, and patience make it an excellent playing partner for any child.”

1. Newfoundland

Also known as the “Newfie,” DogTipper.com says this breed loves and protects the children in the family. “Gentle, kind, intelligent, and patient, this dog is easily trained and enjoys human companionship. An active breed, Newfies need a daily walk or romp in the backyard.”

This list is certainly not exhaustive! What other breeds do yo think should be listed?
