Taking care of you sick dog

It is one of the worst things to know that your child is sick. For some of us, this child we speak of has four legs and a full coat of fur. Yes, in Manassas a sick dog can be a heart wrenching experience for pet parents too.

The real difference between having a sick child and a sick pet is the parent's level of preparedness. Be sure to get your pet to the Woodbridge vet, and then implement these ten things in your care-giving routine to settle the unrest of both your pet and yourself.

  •  Keep rice on hand: This is also a good treat for an unsettled stomach. The bland taste of rice is easy on your pet's tummy and is also good for balancing out digestive functions.
  •  Keep the fluids coming: Keeping your pet hydrated is crucial here. They will be losing a lot of fluids, and it's up to you to make sure they're replaced.
  •  Bring out the fuzzy blanket: This seems simple enough, but even the smallest details will help your pet find more comfort on a sick day. Keep a fuzzy blanket or their favorite bed close-by so they can easily find it to rest.
  •  Give lots of attention: Most pets prefer lots of attention on a daily basis, but this will hold especially true when they're under the weather. If you can, try to stay home with your pet to give them the attention they need. If you can't stay home, try to arrange for someone to check in on him or her throughout the day.
  •  Use a good carpet cleaner AND deodorizer: Keeping a carpet cleaner on hand is a given, however, a deodorizer will be just as important. After you've cleaned up the mess on the surface, be sure to follow up with a deodorizer. Most cleaners won't eliminate odors on their own.
  •  Lay a protective surface down: Keeping a towel or plastic mat under your pet while they're sick will help you prevent some of the mess. This shouldn't be too difficult of a task as your pet will more than likely opt for staying in the same spot for most of the day.
  •  Clean the litter box and/or outdoor bathroom often: More frequent bathroom visits will mean more mess. This mess is not only inconvenient, but a potential health risk as well. Be sure to clean up after your pet more frequently when they're sick. The mess can cause infection and further illness should they try to use the bathroom on top of it. Regularly check the mat or towel under your pet as well.
  •  Make sure your pet gets some rest: This is huge. Your pet will need as much rest as possible. A long walk may seem ideal given their more frequent need to use the bathroom, but you're both better off keeping them in and resting to facilitate the healing process. As mentioned in point 4, keep a comfy bed on the main level of your home so they can access it easily. Encourage them to stay there and get some sleep by keeping food and toys nearby as well.
