How to Get Your Dog to Mingle With Other Dogs

28 15:26:10

Mingling might come naturally to humans but when it comes to our canine companions it seems a little unfamiliar territory. Dogs are quite like us in certain ways, they too are social animals but when it comes to their world- they live in packs and follow a strict hierarchical order. So when it comes to mingling with other dogs it can rather be a scary experience for your dog. You should socialize your dog more often to make things comfortable for him or else you should take some inspiration from Marmaduke who learnt his lesson on socializing rather late.

While you are at it, make sure the process is supervised and structured as it will help your dog to get accustomed to the company of other dogs. In case you are wondering why mingling is required then you must know that the process will help your dog learn appropriate behaviors or else he will always struggle while interacting with other dogs. You can easily help your dog to mingle with others by using some gentle techniques listed below.

Techniques that helps dogs to mingle with other dogs:

1. You need to socialize your dog to other dogs as soon as possible. The best time is when they are puppies. You need to expose them to unfamiliar objects and experiences, other dogs and people too so that they can get used to them.

2. You can also invite a dog owning friend over to your house as it will provide you more control over the first moments when your dog mingles with others. But make sure to keep both the dogs on leashes till the time they are comfortable with each other. Remember to keep you dogs on their leashes while they mingle with each other as it not only gives you a sense of control but also gives your dog a sense of security.

3. You could create a mingling atmosphere by keeping your dog and your friend’s dog at least 10 feet away but facing each other. Now slowly walk towards each other with your dog and ask him to heel or stay. Walk past, and repeat it a few times till they start to get comfortable with each other.

4. While your dogs are still on their leashes, bring them close together. Let them get to know each other (dogs do it by sniffing). A few minutes later, grab your dog and start to walk. Then turn around and repeat the same procedure for some more time allowing a longer mingling time.

5. You could also take your dog on frequent trips to park as it provides a natural environment for mingling. Various parks have double gates so it is rather difficult for them to run away and so you can free them from their leashes. Allow your dog to run around the park, sniff and explore. In case he nips or humps at other dogs, call him back. Many dogs may display dominant behavior in a group environment but frequent socialization will reduce the chances for such incidents to occur.
