The English Bulldog ?Loving, Docile and the Coolest Mascot

It's by no means an accident or a mistake that your English Bulldog is not only the 14th most popular breed in the United States, but also a famous mascot.

Images of protruding jaws, accompanied by the tale-tale under bite, on a round head with wrinkly eyebrows and jowls, head tilted at a 15-degree angle, are the one most of us have in our minds. The picture is greatly improved when she is sitting staring at her owner with a quizzical look on her sweet face. As if attempting to mouth the words, "I love you, and please promise to love me forever!" your English Bulldog has stolen your heart, hasn't she?

There is a lot to love about the English Bulldog. She's loyal, incredibly mild-mannered, would far rather be by your side, literally glued or with Velcro, if possible, than anywhere in the world. About the only person she might pass you over for is your pint-sized daughter or son.

When she's not snoring louder than the freight train that shakes your house as it passes, she's sleeping on your tile floor to stay cool. When she's not playing hide and seek with your kids - moving from her hiding place, making it easier to be found - she's lying down next to you as you read your latest Spy novel or knit that sweater you plan to give to your mother. And as she ages you will care for her as she did for you, because she's been such a loyal companion.

What makes the English Bulldog one of the best breeds to own? Although once a ferocious antagonizer of bulls in the bullring from the 1500s to 1835, a positive aspect of selective breeding, all of that ferocity has been bred out of her. As if she made a complete 180?personality change, she has become the love of all who have welcomed her into their pack.

Indeed this loving disposition has influenced Americans to adopt this breed by the thousands, however it doesn't hurt that she is as famous as she is, either.

From the mascot of the Unite State Marines to several Universities in the US, she has clearly left an impression on all who meet her.

Famous mascots include:

Handsome Dan of Yale University

Tupper the Dog who attends Bryant University

Jack the Bulldog can be seen walking the Georgetown Campus

Simply named "Spike", he accompanies students at Gonzaga University to class

Mississippi State's Bully

One of the more famous mascots is University of North Carolina at Ashville's Rocky

There are of course others, in fact 23 other English Bulldogs who, with their charm alone, have managed to get a prestigious University education. And when they're not pledging Phi Beta Kappa, they're attending the home games of football, basketball or other sports their school competes in or they're posing for promotional pictures that advertise the school.

Although nobody will ever accuse this breed of rivaling a German Shepherd, a Coonhound or an Australian Shepherd in the intelligence department, that's okay. She has no intention taking the SATs or improving her IQ any time soon.

Bigger than a lap dog, with the temperament of a Golden Retriever, it's easy to see why the English Bulldog has stolen your heart and the hearts of your children.
