How to Keep Bugs & Rodents Out of My Garden Shed

Your garden shed is designed for storing your garden tools and accessories to keep them put up and out of the weather. It's the best way to protect your investment and keep everything in great shape for the up-coming season. However, for many people, it usually doubles as extra storage space for items that you want to keep but that you don't have room for inside the home.

This is a great way to store your items but be prepared to encounter a very common problem, which involves being invaded by nasty pests. If you've pulled down a box of stored items to find it crawling with ants or destroyed by rats, you know exactly how upsetting this can be. It seems like mice can chew through anything and they can move in very quickly.

To help prevent this from happening to you, here are some tips on how to keep bugs/rodents out of your garden shed:

  • Don't leave opened bags of grain, seeds and similar items in your garden shed that will attract bugs and rodents.
  • Try to keep everything that has an odor in an airtight container. This will prevent the smell from drawing bugs and rodents to your shed.
  • Use contained insecticides such as ant baits or roach traps to catch any pest that do enter in search of food and shelter.
  • Don't store any kitchen appliances without first cleaning them thoroughly to get rid of any food smells. Even the smallest crumb can attract bugs.
  • If storing clothing, curtains, blankets and similar items, use mothballs to help protect them and drive away the pest.
  • Using herbs such as lavender, tansy and mint as a natural way to prevent bugs and rodents from entering your garden shed is an excellent idea.
  • Check your stored items often to make sure they are pest free.

Mice and rodents can destroy your supplies and anything else that you have stored away. Plus, it can be a real hassle trying to clean up the mess they leave behind. Don't let mice, ants, squirrels and other creatures take over your garden shed and ruin your stored items. Use the tips above to help keep them away.
