A few things to note about wild bird food and wild bird food suppliers

2016/5/3 8:58:24

It's said that feeling wild birds during the winter months will benefit wild birds at a time when they're most likely to encounter food shortages - but since shortages happen all year round, dependent on the season, feeding birds all year round offers birds a much greater chance of survival.

That said, many people do feed wild birds year-round, with bird-tables and feeders being set up in their gardens, in parks, and even in the grounds of local businesses, as a way of attracting some wildlife into an otherwise 'dull' area. It's important to note however, that there are right ways to feed wild birds and then there are wrong ways - unfortunately there are no hard and fast rules to abide by (things often being dictated by changeable environmental conditions), but here are three handy tips to ensure that you do more good than harm by feeding the wild birds in your area.

Suitability of food for young chicks

In times of food shortages, birds won't simply take to eating the morsels left on your bird table, they'll also begin carrying the bird food to their nests, with the intention of feeding their chicks. Unfortunately, some Wild bird food suppliers aren't suitable for these young chicks, and can cause choking.

We're so used to having food available to use when we want it that it's extremely difficult for us to tell when these natural shortages do occur. With this in mind it's important to ensure that the feed you use is suitable for all birds.

Hints for the summer and winter months

During summer, wild birds look for protein-rich foods - this is why seed mixtures are used, and other foods like raisins and currants. Since peanuts can cause a choking risk, it's worth avoiding putting any out, unless they're kept in a feeder which allows only small pieces to be taken.

To keep warm in the winter, wild birds rely on their fat reserves, so wild bird food that's high in fat is essential. Regular feeding is also important, and when possible, it's advisable to feed more than once a day.
