List of Reptiles As Pets. Selecting a pet reptile can seem daunting, but the choice is easier after learning about individual species and their requirements for care. A wide variety of reptiles available as pets reflect the vast differences in size, temperament and needs depending on species. Keep in mind the adult size and housing needs of each reptile, as well as whether the ability to handle the creature is important to you.

Snakes

Small corn snakes to giant boa constrictors and many exotic varieties in between keep the pet market interesting. When selecting a snake, size and feeding requirements may be the important factor. Large constrictors, for example, should never be kept in homes where they may have access to small children or pets. Many snakes also require live food, deterring the squeamish from the prospect of feeding live mice and rats to a snake.

Iguanas

Iguanas frequently sell as juveniles less than 1 foot in length, but adults easily can grow to more than 5 feet and require a cage at least 6 feet tall and wide. Consider the expense of building or purchasing an enclosure this large before getting an iguana. If housing is not a problem, iguanas make friendly and gentle pets, and most enjoy spending time out of their cage watching TV or exploring a supervised area with their owner. Iguanas are herbivores, eliminating the need for live food.

Bearded Dragons

An adult bearded dragon can be kept in a 100 gallon or larger tank and requires a diet of insects and fresh greens. Bearded dragons are easy to tame and handle, making them a popular choice for owners who like interaction with their pets. Bearded dragons are naturally desert dwellers, and prefer sand and rocks to reptile bark and branches.

Leopard Geckos

These colorfully patterned lizards do well in tanks as small as 10 gallons, though larger exhibits will make room for more decorations and exercise. Leopard geckos also tolerate some handling, but these primarily nocturnal animals do best if contact is restricted to the mornings and evenings. Allow them to sleep during the day if they choose. Leopard geckos eat insects and should be offered a variety of bugs.

Anoles

One of the most affordable and easily kept reptiles, anoles can be found at most pet stores. They dislike being handled, and are therefore good options for owners with little time to spend caring for more demanding species. Anoles are generally around 5 inches long and can be green or brown depending on their mood and time of day. They like plenty of areas to climb and hide.
