Choosing the Right Rabbit Litter

2016/5/3 9:01:28

There are many different types of rabbit litter available on the market for your rabbit. Each type of litter has a variety of strengths and weaknesses that contribute to its overall quality as a type of rabbit litter. This article will briefly review the pros and cons of the various types of litter available for your rabbit.

Clay litter is good at absorbing waste matter and odor, however it has a tendency to be dusty. This is not good if your rabbit is a digger (most of them are!). It can cause lung problems in your rabbit. Also many clay litters come with deodorizing crystals that are fine for cats but can be toxic to your rabbit.

Rabbits are likely to eat while they use the restroom, so any litter that clumps is likely to cause problems in your rabbit's digestive tract after it consumes amounts of the litter.

Plain old newspaper is often used for rabbit litter. The advantage to newspaper is that it is cheap (often free) and very absorbent. However it provides almost no odor control and sometimes the ink can stain your rabbit's feet. Office paper is also inexpensive and rabbits enjoy playing in it, however it isn't absorbent and it doesn't control odor.

Some people use food pellets as a litter box medium. Rabbit food pellets are cheap and do a good job of absorbing waste matter and odor. However because rabbits like to eat and go to the bathroom at the same time, they may encourage your rabbit to overeat and develop an obesity problem.

I have found the best type of rabbit litter to be made from paper pulp or recycled newspaper. These types of rabbit litter absorb waste and odor excellently. They are non-toxic and relatively inexpensive. They have few if any downsides. I hope this review was useful in helping you select the type of rabbit litter that is the safest and most effective for keeping your rabbit healthy and keeping your home looking and smelling clean.
