How to Wash Rabbit Fur. Rabbits do not usually need you to clean their fur for them, because they clean themselves regularly. Putting your rabbit in a tub of water can cause the rabbit to panic or even go into shock. Water also eliminates the rabbit’s natural body oils, which can dry out their skin and make their fur look bad. There are instances, however, where your rabbit may have gotten very soiled or stained, and may need a little helping hand.

Things Needed

• Wash cloth
• Warm water
• Rinseless shampoo
• Towel
• Grooming brush

Step 1

Moisten a wash cloth or simply your hands with warm water. Make sure there is just enough water to get the rabbit’s fur damp.

Step 2

Rub your wash cloth or hands over the rabbit gently, until his fur is evenly damp.

Step 3

Check the area around the tail and hind legs for any feces that might be dried onto the fur, and use your wash cloth or fingers to remove them.

Step 4

Shake the excess hair off your wash cloth or hands and continue until your rabbit’s fur looks clean.

Step 5

Spray on a rinseless shampoo if there are stains from food or feces. Work this into your rabbit’s fur with your hands and dry him off with a towel.

Step 6

Finish by brushing your rabbit’s fur in its natural direction, removing any excess hair or dirt.

Warnings

• If your rabbit has gotten extremely soiled, it may be necessary to wash him in a little bit of water. Only submerge the soiled areas in warm water, but never the rabbit’s face. You can use a gentle shampoo to clean the area, if necessary, but make sure you rinse and dry the area thoroughly with a towel. Finish with brushing.
