Decorating your home with a Koi pond is always a beautiful addition to your home. No doubt, that it is a pleasurable experience to sit beside an artificially made Koi pond looking at the haphazard movements of the shimmering KOI fishes of various colors. But just keeping a colorful Koi pond and gaining appreciation from the visitors will go to waste if you do not take proper care of the KOI fishes. Mind it, that a little negligence can result in the death of the Koi fish, not to refer the squandered effort and money invested on the pet fish. And as we all know, feeding your Koi fish is one of the most vital aspects of Koi fish care.

Give nutritional food to your Koi

You can easily distinguish a health Koi fish from those mal-nourished ones. The brighter the colour, the healthier is the Koi fish. So to ensure health, see that the food you are giving contains the nutritional components that the fish requires. Mind it, that the Koi fishes require a perfect combination of fats, proteins, vitamins, fibre and minerals in their food. You can feed them with live foods like water-melons, peas, lettuce and insects. But the ready-made Koi food is much better.

Most of the proprietary Koi foods are cereal-based with various different components included either to enhance colour or assist digestion. And the kind and quantity of food you offer your Koi fish will vary as per their size and brightness of colour.

Selecting Koi food is important

Select a food that can be easily eaten by the smallest Koi in your pond, in other cases they might die of starvation. If your Koi pond has both larger and smaller fishes, give them a mixture of small and large foodstuffs. Make sure that the small fishes are adequately fed.

Types of Koi Food

Koi food mostly comes in 2 forms: Sinking and Floating.

Koi are basically bottom-feeding fishes and so are best suited to the sinking food. This food is prepared by compressing the meal through a die at high pressure. The meal contains enough fat and requires considerable time to get dissolved in cold water. The only problem with this type of food is that you can’t see your Koi feeding. Fortunately, Koi will eat food from the surface. You can also train your fish to take food from your hand. Special expanded food is prepared for this purpose. These are basically steam prepared to make an external shell protecting the food particle from getting saturated for a while. Once the shell gets dissolved, the food will sink.
