This post goes through sea life that definitely should not be joined with betta fish, and also a few sea life that may work. If you are searching for the safest sea creatures that can share a tank with your betta fish, Read Fish that can Live with Bettas Part 1.

Many of the sea creatures below are incorrectly thought to be a good match for a betta, but aren't for the following reasons:

- they prefer cooler water
- they require a different pH balance
- they generate an unhealthy amount of waste
- they may be active swimmers that will conflict with the territorial nature of your betta
- they may attack or bite your betta

Borderline Sea Creatures that may Live with Bettas:

The Zebra Danios Species
Zebra Danio is a strong creature that can stomach some betta fish aggression. However, they may annoy or bite your betta, so are not a great tank friend. Furthermore, they like a group of similar fish and need a lower water temperature. If you do choose to pair them with your betta fish, make sure your fish tank is large enough!

Wild or Feeder Guppies
Feeder Guppies are small fish that can pair with bettas, but their vividly pigmented friends, fancy guppies, are a definite bad idea. Wild guppies are usually grey and not brightly pigmented, peaceful, and small. Both wild and fancy guppies have lengthy, flowing fins which can generate conflict, with the male betta fish occassionally confusing them for another male.

Neon Tetras
Neon Tetras enjoy teped, higher pH water and plant life, so enjoy identical tank environment as your betta. However, they are a fish that prefer a school of friends that thrive in more sizeable groups, and can also sometimes nip at your betta's tail. For this reason they are a borderline fish - it is best to see how your betta fish reacts as soon as you add a Neon Tetra before making them permanent tank mates.

Rasboras
Rasboras are identical Neon Tetras in that they love the same water conditions but are a creature that needs friends to be happiest. Their high activity level means they are not ideal tank companions, but in a big enough tank the pairing may work.

Listed here are fish that absolutely shouldn't share a tank with your betta, disregarding anything you may hear from anyone else.

Gouramis or Cichlids
Gouramis and Cichlids are very similar to bettas - they stay at the top of the fish tank, blow bubbles to nest, and enjoy hiding around fauna. However, they're a bit too similar - Gouramis, Cichlids and bettas are very territorial and undoubtedly shouldn't be deposited in the same tank.

Chinese Algae Eaters
When they are young, these creatures are satisfactory to share a tank with a betta. But when they grow to full size they become aggressive and territorial, and will also be too large to place in the same tank as your betta fish.

Platys
Platys will frequently bite betta fish. They also require a higher pH level. Generally, they are a bad match for their activities and their water requirements.

Goldfish
Goldfish prefer colder water temperatures and also produce a large amount of waste, which will be extremely unhealthy for your betta. They are a horrible match for your betta fish and are absolutely not a creature that can live with Bettas.
