Breed Description

The Pomeranian is a breed of toy dog that can be traced back, like the related Keeshond, Samoyed, and Norwegian elkhound, to early sled-dog ancestors in the Arctic Circle. The breed is named for the duchy of Pomerania, northern Germany, where, in the early 19th century, it is said to have been bred down in size from a 30-pound (13.5 kilogram) sheep dog. They were bred down from imports in Britain over 100 years ago. The breed was made popular in Britain by Queen Victoria who held many of the larger variety in her kennels. Characteristically spirited but docile, the Pomeranian is a compactly built dog with a foxlike head and small, erect ears. He has a soft, dense undercoat with a profuse harsh-textured outer coat. His heavily plumed tail is set high and lies flat on his back. He is alert in character, exhibits intelligence in expression, is buoyant in deportment, and is inquisitive by nature. Its long coat, especially full on the neck and chest, may be any of a variety of colours, including white, black, brown, and reddish brown. The Pomeranian is cocky, commanding, and animated as he gaits. He is sound in composition and action.
