Finding A Caretaker For Your Dog

Most people get a dog assuming they will be a member of their family for the rest of their lives but what happens to the pet if something happens to the owner? Being a responsible dog owner means you should make provisions for your dog to be taken care of if you are unable to do so for any reason.

The first thing you should do is to try to find someone who can take your dog in immediately in the case of an emergency. This person will not have to provide long-term care but it should ideally be someone who can take care of your dog on short notice. This could be a member of the family or a friend. If this person can keep your dog permanently if needed, then this is ideal, if not you will have to find someone who can.

Provide your short and long-term caretakers with all the information they need to know about your dog. You should write a list of any medication or treatment the dog is on as well as any health issues the dog may have. Write down the number and address of your vet and be sure to list your dog's likes and dislikes. The more information you provide about your dog the better.

Carrying a card with some information around with you is also a good idea. This card should state that you have a pet at home that would need care in case of anything happening to you. Write down the name, number and address of the people you've chosen to be caretakers for your pet as well as any medical information people should be aware of.

You should also notify your neighbors that there is a dog in your house that may need attention if something happens to you. Being prepared is always better than being sorry. Good planning is vital if you want your pet to be taken care of in the event that you are unable to do so. This is especially important if you live on your own.

Being a responsible dog owner means you try to do everything you possibly can to ensure your dog is healthy and happy for the rest of his life, even in the event that he outlives you. Your dog relies on you for his life and planning for any unforeseen circumstances can literally save his life.
