Choosing A Dog According To Your Lifestyle

Depending on your lifestyle you should consider breeds that would live well in your home. For instance there are some dogs that need to have plenty of exercise. This is particularly so for the larger dogs. In most cases this would mean taking the dog for daily walks but there are dogs that thrive on a really good run (off the lead) when you are out at the local park.

In some cases this freedom for your dog is not at all practical due to your local environment so it would not be fair on the dog to have him in a continuously restricted environment when he obviously needs some high-powered exercise.

On the other hand little dogs that have a high cute factor, especially as puppies, but they do have a tendency to be very frisky. This may look like fun at the start but once they grow you'd hope they grow out of it. This is not always the case. Many small breed dogs can be snappy and bark a lot. This can make it uncomfortable for your visitors and for your neighbours and end up keeping you on edge trying to keep him quiet and calm.

If you have little children in the house, you should consider dogs that have a good reputation with children because there are many instances of dogs mauling babies and children. Some dogs are naturally better-tempered and some need to be trained to be good with a child. Either way it is not something to take lightly and caution should be an element in your decision in choosing a family pet.

Some dogs are great in any circumstances and that could possibly be the case for the majority of dogs that are kept happy by paying attention to their needs as a breed. If you have a dog that requires a lot of exercise you could keep it happy by making sure that you cater for that need. On the other hand, if your dog needs more attention, sometimes that is the key to having a well-behaved dog.

The key factor is to remember that the dog has already got characteristics from its breed and those will play an important part of how they react to the various situations in your family home. Don't expect them to behave like a puppet or you may well end up being very disappointed. Choose a breed that you feel has similar energy levels to yourself so that you are not fighting a losing battle when it comes to integrating your lives together.
