How to Check if Your Dog Is Pregnant

How to Check if Your Dog Is Pregnant. Even if you're not an animal expert, you can check if your dog is pregnant. For owners of female dogs that have not been spayed, knowing the signs and indicators of pregnancy is of utmost importance for your dog's health and safety. By paying a little attention to your dog's behavior and activities, you can determine whether or not your dog is pregnant. During the first two or three weeks of pregnancy, there are many noticeable behaviors.

Pregnant dogs become inactive as pregnancy proceeds.

Step 1

Monitor your dog's behavior. If it vomits frequently for a period of a few days to a few weeks, the dog is possibly in the early stages of pregnancy. This will also affect your dog's eating habits; during the first weeks of pregnancy, your dog may eat less or not at all.

Step 2

Approach your dog and try to pet it if you notice vomiting and a lack of appetite. If your dog denies your approach and acts agitated, give it space. Agitated behavior is another symptom of pregnancy.

Step 3

Check your dog for swollen teats or nipples. This is a tried and true indicator of pregnancy and starts within a few weeks of your dog's pregnancy.

Step 4

Monitor the size of your dog's abdomen or stomach. As the pregnancy progresses, your dog's stomach and abdomen will bulge and become quite noticeably engorged with the litter.

Step 5

Take your dog to a licensed animal care professional for a full checkup if you believe the dog may be pregnant.
