My Dog Is Hacking & Wheezing

My Dog Is Hacking & Wheezing. Dog wheezing and hacking can be symptomatic of several different canine health problems. While occasional wheezing is not uncommon in dogs, chronic wheezing and hacking can be a sign of a severe health issue or an airway blockage.

Wheezing and hacking noises may indicate various issues depending on your dog's condition.

Allergies

One of the most common causes of wheezing in a dog is allergies. Like humans, dogs can develop allergies to smoke, pollen, dust, and insects. Allergens like these often irritate a dog's airways, making it difficult to breathe. Canine allergies usually can be managed by removing the triggering allergen from the dog's presence. A vet can prescribe an allergy medication to ease your pet's discomfort. In many cases this medication is over the counter and consequently affordable.

Upper Respiratory Issues

Many dogs suffer from upper respiratory problems like kennel cough, asthma, and bronchitis. Wheezing and hacking is symptomatic of any upper respiratory illness. While bronchitis and kennel cough generally go away within 1-2 weeks, asthma may be a more chronic condition. Asthma is often present in dogs suffering from allergies. Wheezing in dogs with asthma is often accompanied by sneezing and a runny nose.

Heartworms

Dogs infected with heartworms are known for wheezing, shortness of breath and coughing. A dog contracts heartworms through the bite of an infected mosquito, from which larvae are deposited into his blood stream. Within several months these larvae develop into worms that lodge themselves within the dog's heart and restrict blood flow. With a reduced blood flow it becomes very difficult for the dog to breathe properly which in turn causes wheezing.

Visiting the Vet

If your dog is experiencing chronic or elongated bouts of wheezing, visit your vet immediately. Often a dog's wheezing is not fatal. However, in some cases it indicates a condition that requires immediate attention. It is best to get a professional opinion to better understand your dog's individual situation. Never treat or medicate your canine before consulting your vet.
