Step 1

Face the dog house opening away from the wind. This keeps the wind from blowing directly inside the dog house and protects your dog from harsh winds and cold air.

Step 2

Place the dog house near a building, such as the home or a garage to keep the wind from blowing directly onto the dog house.

Step 3

Drape a tarp over the dog house to prevent rain and snow from rotting the wood or dripping into the dog house. This also helps to keep wind out of the cracks and crevices of the roof, keeping your dog warmer.

Step 4

Lay down straw or a few blankets to provide your dog with warmth from the ground. Change the straw and bedding regularly to avoid mold.

Step 5

Insulate the dog house. Adding insulation to a dog house can help to keep your dog protected from the cold outside air.

Step 6

Fill a pillowcase about half full with rice. Tie the end together with garbage bag twists or a ribbon. Microwave the bag for about 20 seconds, or until it's warm. Place the rice bag in the dog house with the dog to keep him warm through the night.
