Identifying Causes Of Dog Skin Problems

One of the most common problems that may afflict dogs is skin disorders. Dog skin problems can arise due to various causes and they can lead to serious troubles if not paid proper attention. Dog skin problems can be self limiting, chronic or long lasting. Whatever be the nature of skin problem in dogs, they require immediate veterinarian consultation in order to stop them from spreading. The skin condition of a dog is also a good indication of its general health. A healthy dog will have smooth and flawless skin while a dog with scaly and itchy skin is sure to have some problem in his body and immune system.

If your dog is regularly licking, scratching or biting himself, you can assess that it has some form of skin ailment. Redness in the skin may occur with hair loss and bumps if your dog develops any skin problem. Open sores or flaky skin is also an indicator of dog skin problems. Presence of parasite infection such as mites, fleas and ticks may develop serious skin problems. For determining the presence of parasites, veterinarians examine the skin scrapping of a dog under a microscope and then decide upon the line of treatment.

Skin problems can also arise due to various allergies such as food allergies, allergies caused due to environmental pollution and contact allergies. It is very difficult to diagnose an allergic condition and as such deciding upon the course of treatment becomes little difficult. Dogs can get an allergic attack from any food, household items, dust, pollen etc. Powder, shampoo or skin lotions may be prescribed in these conditions to soothe the skin condition of the dog.

Skin problems in dogs can also develop when bacteria gets trapped in their fur which in turn develops sores or hot spots on the body. This happens when the dog's skin coat does not dry completely after bathing, swimming or playing in the pond and lakes. Sometimes parasites may get stuck on their body when they sit on wet grass outside.

Dog skin problems can also arise due to exposure to the dry heat. As a result of exposure dogs develop an itchy and flaking skin which causes irritation and they keep chewing and scratching their skin. A home humidifier to add moisture to the environment around the dog house can be helpful in prevention of dry skin problems.

Skin problems in dogs can also arise due to internal healh problems such as hypothyroidism and problems of the immune system. Whatever be the reason of Dog skin problems, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian who can properly examine and diagnose the cause of skin problems.

Changes in diet or application of powder, creams, shampoos may be considered in the first stage of treatment. However, for more acute dog skin problems the vet may prescribe steroids, rinses, antifungals, antihistamines etc. For acute skin problems in dogs, the treatment may need to be continued for a long period of time while smaller problems can be cured within few days.
