Basic Puppy Obedience Training

I am sure that you are excited about your new pup, who wouldnt be? But here is the catch, you will have to do all the training from ground up and not all of us can afford to send off our pups to the high flying dog obedience schools. You should be able to handle the basic puppy obedience training with ease as long as you follow the pointes given below. These pointers are based on the Adam G. Katz methods of dog training and as such, they have proven to be quite effective when it comes to training pups and dogs alike.

1. Potty in the yard - Potty training is one issue that you need to get started on right away. I am sure that you have already found out that your pup needs to go a lot, since they are small, their bellies are small likewise. As a result, they need to go often, sometimes as much as 8 times in a single day. You need to start potty training him from day one. The minute you see your pup sniffing at your carpet, trying to get into the squatting position, pick him up and rush to the yard. In time, with positive reinforcement, he will get the message that he needs to go in the yard as opposed to any other part of your house.

2. Crate the pup The crate is an effective tool when it comes to training your pup. You can use the crate to set boundaries; get rid off the unacceptable behavior and more importantly, to house break your pup in. Your dog will not poop in his new home [the crate] and will learn to indicate when it is time for him to go into the yard. More importantly, you can use the crate to deal with your pups teething issues, by providing him with chew toys. In this way, you can actually protect your furniture from being chewed upon.

3. Socialize with your pup You will need to spend some quality time with your pup to allow him to relate to you and to develop a close relationship with him. Once your pup is assured of your attention, he will be less likely to suffer from any anxiety pangs. Take him out for walks to dog parks; allow him to explore the world around him. This will allow him to relate to other dogs, to other strangers and in short, provide him with a firm grasp on the world at large. Socializing is an important developmental tool that enables your dog to become well adjusted.

4. The leash on the dog Your pup will try to take off the collar the moment you put it on, dont lose heart. Every pup does that, the key is to slip on the collar quietly and then distract him from the strange object around his neck right away by offering him a treat and playing with him. Once your pup has learnt to accept the collar, try to slip on the leash using the same method. You should be able to get your pup to accept his new leash in this manner.

These are some of the pointers to help you deal with some of the basic puppy training issues. As these pointers are based upon the Adam G. Katz methods of dog training, they will prove quite invaluable to you when it comes to training your pup!
