Getting in TTouch With Your Dog by Linda Tellington-Jones is one of several books on how to use these very small, light movements to address a variety of health and behavioral problems in dogs, cats and horses.

TTouch is a bodywork technique that was invented and developed by Linda Tellington-Jones in the 1980s. She initially developed it for use on horses, but soon started using the technique on wild animals and pets as well, and eventually also on humans. Over the years, Tellington-Jones has been asked to work on all kinds of animals in a variety of settings, such as wildlife rehabilitation centers and zoos. Some of my favorite success stories include how she used TTouch to help a monkey overcome emotional trauma after it had been used for psychological research; worked on the orca who starred in "Free Willy" to increase his confidence; and helped a young leopard at a zoo break out of obsessive habits.

TTouch is not massage; it works on a cellular level. Scientists have found that the small circular movement of the TTouch stimulates four different brainwaves at the same time, creating the ideal functioning mode of the brain. When using these small movements, you help the cells awaken, thereby speeding up the process of healing, learning and changing. It can help calm aggression and fear. It can help an animal overcome shyness, nervousness and car sickness as well as bad habits such as jumping, leash pulling and excessive barking. In humans, conditions such as chronic pain, migraines, anxiety and depression have been treated successfully.

One of the many wonderful things about this technique is that you don't have to know anything about anatomy to be able to use it successfully. Anybody can learn the basics in a just a few hours, and this book is a great source if you want to give it a try. Each movement is thoroughly described and illustrated with photos. There are also many case studies, and a list of health issues and behavioral problems and the TTouches you can use for each.

I use the technique on my dog in stressful situations such as during thunderstorms, or when going to the vet, and I can tell you that it makes a huge difference. Whenever I try using it on myself, just doing a few basic TTouch circles on my leg, I get an immediate feeling of calm and happiness. Contentment even. Give it a try, on yourself, other family members, or on your pets. I think you'll be amazed at the impact these small movements can have.
