Emphysema is also called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or chronic obstructive lung disease. Pulmonary emphysema is a chronic lung disease. In this condition abnormal amounts of air accumulate in the lung's many tiny air sacs to the point where they become enlarged, and may break or be damaged and form scar tissue. Emphysema is strongly associated with cigarette smoking.
Smoking is the leading cause of pulmonary emphysema and various other fatal ailments as well like lung cancer. In rare cases, even non-smokers who lack a protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin can develop emphysema. There are few other causes of pulmonary emphysema also like:
� Exposure to certain gases or fumes in the workplace
� Exposure to heavy amounts of secondhand smoke and pollution
� Frequent use of cooking fire without proper ventilation
Pulmonary emphysema develops slowly so most of the people don’t even realize that they are ill. You can identify if you have pulmonary emphysema by looking for the following symptoms:
� Cough, with or without mucus

� Shortness of breath (dyspnea) that gets worse with mild activity
