I am a lover of nature and a bird watcher. Sometimes I wonder that the rate at which we are cutting trees and destroying forests, will we ever get to hear the sounds of birds again. Man’s demands seem insatiable and we are mindlessly trampling over the eco � system to make way for more population and to meet their growing demands of housing, clothing and food. In this race for being number one in all spheres, we seem to be trampling over these sweet, harmless creations of god, who were actually meant to bring delight to man.

Have you ever imagined what kind of a world it would be without the chirping of birds in the trees or bushes. Some of these birds are very rare and others almost extinct. Perhaps the varieties of birds that we still get to see and hear may not be around for the coming generations, thanks to rapid industrialization. As we in our greed for land are gobbling up their habitat, will they ever be able to launch a campaign for lebenstraum or living space like Hitler did? Man’s favorite past time - bird watching and hunting must be given a new dimension.

It seems that the best place to hear different bird sounds is in a bird sanctuary where conservationists are trying their level best to breed rare species in captivity. Birds can also be kept in houses as pets. I remember visiting a friend who had a pair of white cockatoos to keep her company. It was fascinating to watch the movement of its head crest while it emanated gurgling sounds. It made me feel so close to nature and there was this urge to protect these birds from extinction.

It is great to be woken up to the call of birds early in the morning rather than the shrill sound of an alarm clock that is sure to knock you out of the bed.
