There are so many beautiful varieties of birds throughout the world that it is hard to decide which type of birds to keep in an aviary in your back yard or if you really love hearing them chirping in the early mornings you may decide to breed them.

Indian Ringneck Parrots

Indian ringnecks are a beautiful medium sized parrot. They are very popular when trained as house hold pets. Anyone can teach them to do tricks although they can surprise you with a few unexpected tricks of their own . With patience you can teach them to whistle and talk although they are very clever at picking up the bad words that no one admits to teaching them.

Breeding and Caring for your Birds

Starting an aviary

Ringnecks are not exactly the best birds for the novice to start for your first aviary. I would suggest that you begin with some of the smaller parrots like Cockatiels or Neophema (grass) parrots and learn from them. Once you learn more about bird management then move onto these bigger parrots.

Aviaries

Ringnecks need bigger aviaries than the smaller parrot as they have a larger wingspan and as you can see in the above picture they have a very long tail. If you want to be successful at breeding with them, you need to have one pair in each cage. Ringnecks like their privacy and will fight amongst themselves if you have more males than females or mismatched numbers of birds.

Each pair of Ringnecks would need to have a flight area of approximately 2-1/2 metres high x 4 metres long and at least a metre wide. It would be cruel to even think of putting two ringnecks in anything smaller.

You can have two or three pairs in one aviary as long as you have a big aviary. I would also suggest you put toys in the larger aviary to distract them. Things like rope swings with a knot tied in it. Different shaped pieces of wood will keep them amused and give them something to chew on preventing boredom. A couple of practice golf balls with the holes in them are another favourite toy for any bird.

Setting up your Aviary

Perches

Place one perch under cover near the nest box and at least one at the other end so as to encourage natural flight. These can be made from natural tree branches or thicker pieces of doweling.

Feed and Water

Never place water or food under a perch as they will become contaminated from their droppings. Where possible feed the birds on a shelf half way up the aviary, to discourage mice.

Always give your bird’s fresh fruit early every day and remove it before dark. Good clean seed is of paramount importance to keeping healthy birds.

Nest boxes

Ringnecks need a nest box of at least 600mm high by 400mm square. They need bigger boxes as they have longer tails. Hollow bush Logs make good nests or make them out of untreated or raw timber. If making a wood nest box you will have to cut a round hold a few inches from the top on one side and drill a small hole underneath to place a small perch for them to enter the nest.

Other types of Birds

Finches

Over thirty five years I have bred all types of finches and parrots. During this time I still do not have a real favourite as I loved them all for different reasons. Finches are so friendly and I used to spend hours watching the little antics they would get up to during the mating season and building their nests.

Small to Medium Parrots

Parrots on the other hand have different personalities. I have bred budgies although I soon got rid of these because they are so viscous, in the way they will kill other budgie babies to take over their nests. Weiros or Cockatiels’ are a medium sized parrot that are great talkers and will make really good household pets.

If you truly love birds then why not start with a small aviary in your back yard and learn as you go by starting with easily cared for birds. That way you will know how much work is involved in caring and looking after your birds.
