Budgies Another Great Pet To Consider For The Home

Budgies are colourful, playful, , energetic, entertaining, easy to train and sometimes people find them talkative. They have a great personality .All this in a little bird no wonder they are so popular. Their small size is what keeps budgies from being thought of as parrots but that is really what they are. The budgies have been a very large sought after bird since the mid 1860’s when they were brought from Australia to England and the expanded to the European continent. They have grown to be one of the most popular pet birds.

The budgies were found to be called by Australian Aborigines betcherrygah ( sometimes spelled budgerygah) and was interpret by the explorers to mean "good bird" but the explorers discovered later the good meant as in a good bird to eat. This little bird is also called a parakeet.

A wild budgie is a small, slender parrot with a pointed tail, pointed wings, small beak, typically seven and a half to eight and a half inches long overall with central tail feathers three and a half to four inches long. These birds are much smaller but similar to the American Budgies which are the ones you find in a pet store.

The budgie, like the parrot breed, can turn their heads 180 degrees so they can reach what is called the uropygial gland ( oil gland) at the upper base of the tail. The budgies smear the oil secretions onto their beaks and then spread the oil over their feathers for waterproofing. This helps keep some of their plumage dry during a rain storm. Their beak is small with its base covered with feathers that can be fluffed to cover almost all of the beak. .

Budgies are good with young children but under adult supervision and they must be fed twice a day, every day. These are really great pets for children at the age of twelve and above. Budgies also require their cage papers changed regularly which again is a good chore for children. Children can accidentally injure a budgie by grabbing him to tight or accidentally throwing him if nipped or scratched by surprise. Therefore children should be taught how to hold a budgie and how to respond from a budgie’s behaviour such as the small nips or taps from a budgie’s beak.

Another thing to consider before bringing a budgie into the home is what other pets are there. Fish in a aquarium, a lizard in a terrarium will be no problem but dogs, cats, or other birds as pets may cause conflicts. Budgies cannot share their cages with larger or small lovebirds, cockatiels pick on the budgies, Snakes also are not a good idea as budgie is food to them.

Budgies can make great pets to have just make sure the circumstances, the situation and the life you lead is compatible for a budgie. You want both your family and your budgie to be happy within your home.
